Aftercare
Aftercare is crucial for making sure your tattoo heals well, maintains its quality, and stays looking great for years to come. It’s a small but important effort to ensure you get the best result from your tattoo.
Keep the Tattoo Covered
Immediately after your tattoo, your artist will cover it with a bandage or plastic wrap. Keep this on for a few hours (usually 2-4 hours) as recommended by the artist to protect the tattoo from bacteria and dirt.
Gently Clean the Tattoo
After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap (preferably antibacterial).
Use your hands to gently clean the area—avoid using a washcloth or anything abrasive.
Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or towel (don’t rub it).
Once dry, apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment (like Bepanthen or Hustle Butter ) to keep the tattoo moisturized and prevent it from drying out.
Moisturize Regularly
Use moisturizer 2-3 times a day to keep the tattoo hydrated, which helps with healing and prevents scabbing.
Avoid Picking or Scratching
Your tattoo will start to scab and peel, which is a normal part of the healing process. Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling the scabs, as this can cause scarring or affect the tattoo’s appearance.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for the first few weeks. UV rays can damage the tattoo and cause fading. Once healed, always use sunscreen on the tattoo to protect the colors.
Avoid Soaking the Tattoo
For the first few weeks, avoid soaking the tattoo in water (baths, sauna, pools, hot tubs, etc.), as prolonged exposure to water can interfere with the healing process.
Wear Loose Clothing
Wear loose clothing over the tattooed area to avoid irritation or friction, which can cause the tattoo to heal improperly.
Follow Up
If you notice any unusual redness, swelling, or signs of infection, contact your artist or a healthcare professional immediately. It’s normal for a tattoo to be slightly swollen or red initially, but prolonged discomfort could indicate an issue.
Aftercare with second skin
Leave the Second Skin On
When your tattoo is done, your artist will apply the second skin to protect the tattoo from bacteria, dirt, and other external irritants.
Leave the second skin on for 24-48 hours as recommended by your artist. This initial period allows your tattoo to begin healing without being exposed to the elements.
After the initial 24-48 hours, carefully peel off the second skin. Do this slowly to avoid irritating the tattoo or pulling at scabs. Gently pull away from skin.
If you experience any discomfort while removing the second skin, soak it in warm water for a few minutes to loosen it. Doing it in a warm shower is easiest.
